Its not that bad once you do the work to clear them out, im my last game the gas station spawned as a survivor shelter, all windows and doors partially barricaded. Each gas station has enough gas to (reportedly) last for about 50 in-game years. And there are a lot of gas stations. They power down when the power grid goes down, but that's solved by keeping a generator hooked up at the station you're using (turn it off when you leave tho). Don't worry about it.
